With a stroke of his Presidential pen, Barack Obama put an end to Federal Court management of Montana wolves. President Obama signed H.R. 1473 the Budget Resolution, continuing government operations until September 30. A rider attached to the bill requires that in the states of Montana and Idaho the Wolf be removed from the Endanger Species Act (ESA) and returned to individual state management.

Gray Wolf Delisting Amendment

The bill added as an amendment to the Budget Resolution was carried in the Senate by Montana Senator Jon Tester. In the House of representatives the bill was offered by Idaho Representative Mike Simpson.

Governor Schweitzer added, “I welcome the delisting of the wolf in Montana through this budget resolution. This is a common sense measure that will ensure good management of wolves through Montana’s existing plan, which allows for healthy numbers of wolves and safeguards the interests of ranchers and sportsmen. I appreciate Senator Tester’s efforts to shepherd this resolution through Congress for the benefit of all Montanans.”

Common sense has finally shown through and put an end to the abuse of the ESA by wolf advocacy groups. Montana can now get on with proper management of all the wildlife in the state and get some balance back into a few areas where some prey species were suffering under the so-called wildlife management being conducted by a Federal Court.

Other than the delisting, the most important issue covered in the rider removed any jurisdiction of the court going forward.

Though it may not seem so right now, the real winners of today’s developments are the WOLVES.
