On the Summit of Trapper Peak

by BitterrootBob on September 6, 2010

This is the way to reach Trapper Peak using the Baker Lake Trail as a starting point. Starting at the Baker Lake Trailhead reduces the vertical climb by about 400 feet and the overall trail length is about one mile shorter. The trail leaving Baker Lake is obscure and hard to find and follow in places. Make sure and mark the point where you intersect with Trapper Peak Trail, so you can find the route on your return trip.

There is a trail map in the photo gallery below. Head due south from Baker Lake toward the bluff. There are cairns (little man made rock piles) marking the trail. Once you reach the base of the bluff there is a large rock slide. Turn right (west) at the rock slide for about 100 yards. You will find yourself at the base of a gully. There is a well worn trail switch backing up the gully. Take this trail to the top of the gully turn right (west) and follow the ridge on your right to the intersection with the Trapper Peak Trail. You can’t miss this trail, it is well worn and on an open talus slope below Trapper Peak. Make a right (north) on the trail and follow to the summit. There is some rock hopping once you reach the base of the summit. You must follow the cairns to remain on the trail. There is little chance of getting lost if you venture off course, though.

Enjoy the video! See you at the Summit.

[..YouTube..] Do you know any thing about a Darrell E. Hoskins who was lost and missing with a group of hunters in the Bitterroots in the 70′s? They were missing for a long time but eventually found their way out. I would like to hear if you know anything.

[..YouTube..] when we climbed trapper peak every time you stopped to take a look it was beautiful. the summit was amazing. but we didnt plan well. we ran out of water at the summit and i was halucinating when we got back to the truck because i was extremely dehydrated. but i would climb that baby again any day. it was one of the most amazing experiences. if you know Steve Tenold, he is my uncle, and he was our guide.
