Is it possible for an American household to eliminate the garbage they contribute to the landfill? This is the question my wife and I have asked ourselves since I lost my job about a month ago. In our efforts to cut costs we looked at everything and waste removal came up because we only put the can out once a month but pay for weekly pickup. We called Bitterroot Disposal only to find they won’t discount for less than weekly pickup and the smaller receptacles only saved a couple of dollars a month.
Our decision was to try and eliminate our household garbage to what we can recycle or use to start our wood burning stove. At first glance, this seemed like a fairly easy endeavor. Upon further scrutinizing, this is going to be a difficult goal to attain. We simply didn’t comprehend the scope of items we purchase in packaging that is neither recyclable or burnable. Our goal remains despite the difficulty. We plan to have our receptacle removed by April 1, 2010.
Can we accomplish this goal in America today?
