Hamilton is the County Seat of Ravalli County. Hamilton did not begin as a typical pioneer town but was rather a planned community founded by “Copper Barron” Marcus Daly.
Marcus Daly was looking for timber for the mines he owned in Butte and Anaconda. In approximately 1887, Daly bought some sawmills west of the current site of Hamilton, Montana. Daly then brought in two men to plan and develop a town. The two men were James Hamilton and Robert O’Hara. Daly named the town after James Hamilton.
Hamilton, Montana has suffered it’s share of economic hardships but has continued to survive and now is one of the fastest growing towns in Montana. Hamilton retains all the qualities of “Small Town America” while offering every amenity a “country person” could need. The migration of Americans to rural areas, looking for a higher “quality of life” is fueling enormous growth in Montana.
