Bitterroot National Forest Game Warden, Doug Johnson talks about the upcoming big game hunting season. Doug and I discuss the outlook for the 2010 hunting season for elk, deer, sheep and bears throughout the Bitterroot Mountains.

There are areas in the Bitterroot National Forest that have seen a dramatic decline in big game numbers. This decline has contributed greatly to the wolf controversy. There are areas that still have good numbers of big game, as well. The weather outlook for the beginning of archery season looks promising with cooler than average temperatures. As always, weather will play a big role in hunter success. Early snows and temperatures drive the elk from the high country and make them more accessible to hunters.

Doug talks about our poaching problem in the Bitterroot Mountains. He also talks about the pneumonia problem in the bighorn sheep herd. If you suspect someone of poaching or you see any sheep suspected of having pneumonia, you are urged to call 800-TIP-MONT to make a report. Doug has already seen a couple of mule deer poached in early August. Please do not hesitate to report poachers! Keep the hotline number with you while hunting. Again, the number is 800-TIP-MONT.

Craig Jourdonnais, Bitterroot National Forest Wildlife Biologist, will be conducting some aerial surveys later this month and a week prior to the general hunting season. We will be speaking with Craig about the big game herds after he has concluded these surveys. Look for the updated hunting forecast just prior to the late October start to the general hunting season.

Enjoy the 2010 big game hunting podcast. Thanks to Doug for his time in producing this report. You can also download the podcast and listen on your MP3 player or phone at a later time.

I hope everyone has a safe and successful 2010 hunting season. We will also post any updates to the possible reinstatement of the 2010 wolf hunting season.

Good Hunting and enjoy the podcast!
